Introduction to Video: Learn How to Read a Movie

Part 2:

I learned many things from reading Roger Eberts “How to Read a Movie”. To start off I would say one important thing I learned is that having good use of space in movies is a must. Roger stated that people appearing on the right of the screen seem more dominant, while it is opposite for the person on the left. I can find this useful and while having this information in mind I can recall many films that use this technique. Another thing would be the way scenes are edited. This seems pretty self explanatory but, just the way transitions are placed, or the effect each scene has can change the whole thought process during the movie.

One cinema technique I learned from the videos I watched come from the film “The Shining”. The technique is the use of zooms. I can see how this builds intensity. Especially for the type of movie it is used it. Horror films seem to use this technique a good amount. From certain movie I’ve seen, I cant recall the names. They use the zoom feature to lock on to a person face when there may be a loud noise or a jump scare. This can show the fear on said persons face a lot better.
